On Becoming a Wolf Activist—Do the wolf waltz

By Bob Ferris

“Silence in the face of injustice is complicity with the oppressor.” Ginetta Sagan

The title of a recent opinion piece in a Utah paper nailed it: Making War on Wolves.  Because what we are seeing out there is truly a war waged on a wildlife species. And like with most wars there is a parallel public relations campaign making outlandish and unsupported claims against the “enemy” to justify and encourage actions that would normally be considered unethical or inhumane.

Poll after poll shows that anti-wolf forces are in the minority, but their myth and fear-based campaigns can only be countered by a loud and resounding voice of compassion and rationality.  We, who believe that wild places are better off wild, need to speak up and urge others to do the same.  And we need to do that before October 28, 2013.

So what do we need you to do?

1—Send a personal letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell (click here for draft language and addresses)

2—Add you name to petitions (click here) and share those petitions widely through all your social networks (please use the share this buttons at the bottom of this post).

3—Share the following tweet (below) as Sally Jewell is active on Twitter and her staff are monitoring hash marks (simply click on the link and Twitter does the rest).

4—Support your favorite wolf advocacy organization.  (We hope it is Cascadia Wildlands but others need support for what will be a protracted campaign)

Follow these four easy steps—almost like a wolf waltz—and we will put these incredible creatures on a solid pathway to recovery.

If we are not proactive in save these incredible animals then how will our children & their children know anything about the circle of life; how the predators maintain the balance of the wild? WE, the humans, are encroaching on their land, their homes not the other way around! If we do not take the steps to preserve ALL species of animal, WE will end up destroying our own resource! Wolves are essential in our ecosystem. We must take steps to do the right thing & practice preservation!!!!!!

The Politicians really show their class when it comes to picking on a certain species for political gains they're a disgrace to the human race

Very well said. These beautiful animals need to be protected.

I feel very lucky to get to see a wolf on the wild. It would take months or even years and it always makes my heart very glad. PLEASE, LET THEM ALIVE.

The time is now to save what little is left of our wolves! There are more wolves in one sanctuary in Maine than in all of Yellowstone! The political climate is so bad that it seems to me, in my 20+ years of rescuing wolves, that the only way to save them is to put as many as possible into large, wolf habitat sanctuaries and fence out the hunters! With time and education, the last generation of hunters to participate in the first wolf genocide will have died off, and their sickness of mind with them. We need to fight for the wolves but we need to really put a lot of enetgy into educating people, especially young people! Imagine my horror to find a local librarian had tossed out wolf education books for children because of the ongoing slaughter! It is now or never, People!

I live in Texas. Sad I don’t live there near to the wolves to advocate for them. Its not fair that I’m born and raised American and I can not have an opinion on what matters to me the most. There are no wolves in Dallas, Texas so therefore my comments mean nothing. For this reason politics do not need to make Wildlife decisions. Leave Wildlife in the hands of Science. This way then we the people can help make decisions.
