Juvenile northern spotted owl (James Johnston)
Cascadia Wildlands started its work and opened its first office in Oregon for a reason: Oregon’s wildlife and wild places were at the highest risk of all in Cascadia. They still are, and as a result, we focus most of our work in the forests of western Oregon. We are a leading organization systematically monitoring and commenting on BLM actions in western Oregon, and have a handful of staff members, including an in-house attorney, dedicated to protecting the remaining older forests on our public lands.
But Oregon is not all about risk, it is also about promise. The wildlands of southern Cascadia remain some of the best unoccupied wolf habitats in North America and are widely recognized as strongholds for wild salmon. And there are still areas such as the Elliott State Forest, Devil’s Staircase, the Rogue River, the Oregon Dunes, and the Umpqua National Forest than can and should be protected and restored. We strive each and every day to remove the risks and realize the promises.
