Thanks @welc_org for the legal representation and @kalonbaughan for the beautiful wolverine photos to help us tell this story.

#CascadiaWildlands #WeLikeItWild #Wolverine #EndangeredSpeciesAct

Transcript: After more than 20 years of advocacy by Cascadia Wildlands and allies, wolverines finally received federal Endangered Species Act protections.
Numbering only about 300 in the contiguous U.S., snow-dependent wolverine populations are threatened by climate change, habitat loss, trapping, and other anthropogenic pressures.

Wildlife conservation groups twice successfully challenged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in federal court for ignoring science in denying wolverines Endangered Species Act protections.

Two decades of sustained conservation advocacy has at long last secured federal protections and put wolverine on the road to recovery. The US Fish and Wildlife Service will also prepare a recovery plan and designate critical habitat for wolverine in the future and may authorize reintroduction into Colorado.

Work remains: we have concern about potential loopholes in the decision allowing continued harming and killing of wolverines in traps. Since wolverines are scavengers and known as “trap junkies” it is likely that wolverines would be significantly impacted by such a ruling. Stay tuned for an opportunity to tell the agency to close this worrying loophole. For today, we are celebrating long overdue protections for amazing wolverines! Thanks for the awesome legal representation Western Environmental Law Center!
